What's an IMEI, and where can I find it?

When you buy a mobile device from a network it comes with a unique number (usually an IMEI or ESN number). Networks use it to identify your phone. This number tells other providers and operating systems if your phone is locked to a specific network, for example Optus. Or if it’s unlocked and can be used on other networks, such as Telstra or Three Mobile, for example.

An IMEI consists of 15 digits and it’s stored on the Equipment Identity Register (EIR), a central register used by mobile operating systems to store and track mobile phone data.

You can’t unlock your phone without your IMEI. But it takes more than simply knowing the number. You also need access to the central manufacturer database. And only whitelisted software like Mobile Unlocked has that kind of access.

How to unlock your iPhone Xr and other iPhone models

How to unlock an iPhone Xr without a passcode (no factory reset required)

The network lock placed on a phone isn’t only the barrier you’ll come across when using a mobile device such as the iPhone Xr. The security functions on an iPhone Xr are an important iPhone feature and understandably high. But they can prove frustrating and impractical if you’re legitimately entitled to access the device but can’t because you don’t know the passcode or login details. And can't get past the lock screen. This can happen for a number of reasons.

If it’s a secondhand iPhone Xr, the previous owner’s passcode, Apple ID and Face ID set-up may still be active, preventing you from logging on. If it’s a new phone, there’s also the chance you’ve simply forgotten your passcode.

Both of these scenarios will prevent you from using your phone. And could result in your device being disabled if there are too many failed login attempts.

    Phones, particularly the latest model iPhones such as the iPhone Xr, are notoriously expensive to buy outright.
