The benefits of an mobile network check by IMEI

What a difference a network makes! Whether it’s roaming charges, mobile signal, download speeds or price plans, the carrier a phone’s locked to impacts costs and usability.

If you’ve bought a phone that’s locked to a network it limits your choice. And it determines how you use your phone and what that will cost you; rather than it being the other way around. When you carry out a mobile network check by IMEI you take back control. Finding out the facts before you buy means you can make the right choice for you.

It’s worth remembering that a locked phone isn’t necessarily a bad purchase. Using our online service, we can remove the carrier lock on any phone, on any network. But knowing in advance whether or not there’s a lock in place can influence your decision over how much to pay for a device and what the next steps might be to get it up and running.

How our carrier check by IMEI works

An IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is at the heart of our carrier check. A unique code, this 15-digit number links up with detailed information about a specific device (including carrier info). Hard-coded, each IMEI is centrally recorded in a Type Allocation Code (TAC) database, which is managed by the GSM (Global System of Mobile Communications) Association.

With direct and authorized access to this database, our software works at speed to identify the relevant IMEI number and export all relevant device data associated with it.

To ensure the most accurate and up-to-date results, our software runs a daily database check before producing its reports.

How to find your IMEI

To check IMEI number look in the 'Settings', ‘About’ menu of the device, type *#06# into the keypad, look in the battery compartment under the battery, on the SIM card. Failing that, then look for the IMEI number printed or on the sticker on your phone box.

Other popular IMEI checker solutions

A network lock isn’t the only factor to consider when buying a used device. Mobile phones have lots of different technical components. They can also come with a range of manufacturing, usability and model-specific issues. All of these are worth checking out if you’re considering buying a used device.

Our extended range of specialized IMEI services cover all of the main concerns. Want a general overview? Try our free IMEI checker.

Blacklist status check

Blacklisted phones aren’t usable. Not just stolen phones, blacklisted phones can also be blocked due to unpaid bills or because they've been being registered as lost. Once a device is registered as lost, stolen or having outstanding finance, it's listed on a database that prevents the device from being used. Once you’ve bought a blacklisted device, a stolen phone or lost phone, there’s not much you can do to reverse its status. Make sure it’s legal and usable before you buy with a blacklist check.

iCloud activation status check

Having an iCloud account or Apple ID is essential if you want to make use of all the features and apps that come with Apple devices. But if you’re buying a used phone there’s a chance it will be locked to the previous owner’s Apple ID account, which renders the device almost unusable. Reduce the risk by finding out if there’s a locked iCloud account registered to the phone before you buy it.
