Sony Xperia Z6 UK release date, price and specification rumour

Sony Xperia Z6 UK release date, price and specification rumour

23 Mar 2016

Tech enthusiasts in the UK were waiting eagerly for Sony Xperia Z6 at MWC in Barcelona on 22 February 2016 but were left disappointed. Undaunted in their hopes for this smartphone to hit the market, fans expected that IFA would present the opportunity for the gadget to finally be unveiled. This is not about to happen too.

Sony is sending mixed signals. We are left to make intelligent guesses and scour rumour-mills to get some glimpse into the potential dates for the release of Sony Xperia Z6 in UK. We even don’t know the specs or price but we can tell you what rumour mills are saying.

Here we go

The first unpleasant news that reached the market after Sony Xperia Z6 skipped Barcelona was that IFA would also not be the launching pad. Sony came out to deny this rumour as reported by uSwitch, but the tech giant reiterated that the launch could happen in future.

It will be remembered that in March 2015 we were waiting for Sony to reveal the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet and the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua (a smartphone), but nothing was said about the Sony Xperia Z4 that everyone was expecting.

What happened is that Sony launched the latter in Japan in May 2015 and chose to call it simply Z4. In the UK, perhaps because the device was not significantly different from the Xperia Z3 it was called Sony Xperia Z3+. Reviewers had a field day poking holes into the new device and the ensuing overheating problems did not make matters easier for Sony.

Market players and consumers confirmed gossips that Sony, which was undergoing hard financial times and was retrenching workers, could not afford to release the customary annual duo upgrades of smartphones. That is why MWC (in late February and early March) and IFA (in September) were rumoured to be the time for Sony to prove doubters wrong.

Sony launched the Xperia Z5 at IFA last year, and people thought it had its groove back and would launch the Xperia Z6 in Barcelona this year. However, what we saw at the MWC was the unveiling of Xperia X and XA and not the much-expected Xperia Z6.

We then began to hope that September 2nd 2016 at IFA would be the great moment for the smartphone to be released. The sad news is that we may not be seeing the Xperia Z6 now or in future. Sony Mobile’s Senior Product Marketing Manager, Jun Makino, had this to say when asked by uSwitch about the unveiling of the gadget, “I can't comment on the future, but we will not be releasing a Z6."

The bad news for those who were expecting the Z6 does not end there. Makino emphasised that the smartphone would not be launched and that the company was shifting its focus to boosting its Xperia X range of mobile devices. If this is any consolation, Tech Radar managed to get a clarification from Sony to the effect that the Z6 could be available at some unspecified date in future.

How much will the Xperia Z6 cost if it is launched in the UK?

From experience, the Sony Xperia Z6 will be priced £550 or thereabouts. If it releases Compact or Premium versions, they should cost between £430 and £630 if the pricing of the Z5 range is anything to go by. Hopefully the 4K screen that featured in the Z5 could be incorporated into the Z6 for those interested in large-screen devices.

What specs should we expect?

Understandably, most of the rumours on the Xperia Z6 are about whether or not the smartphone will be launched as opposed to its specs. IFA still looks possible to some people so there are some speculations on the possible features of the device, especially for those expecting it to be an upgrade of the Z5.

Docomo, a Japanese site that can be relied upon for relevant information, cites the following specs: 5.2.in WQHD IPS display Snapdragon 8290 processor Adreno 530 graphics 4GB of RAM Storage of 16/32GB MicroSD card capability Waterproof capability (IP68 certification) 802.11ac Wi-Fi Bluetooth 4.2. Front and rear cameras (23Mp and 5.1Mp respectively).

Further, expect a square shape, similar to the Z5, in keeping with Sony’s tradition of adhering to recognized shapes.

The fingerprint scanner is likely to be within the power button.

As for the processor, though we expect Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820, Digitimes reports that like Huawei, Apple and Samsung did in the past, Sony may opt to develop its own processors.

The battery is likely to be the long-lasting type and it is almost certain that the phone will have reversible USB Type-C capability. It is expected that Sony may consider wireless charging for Xperia Z6.

Finally, this phone is likely to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with an upgrade to Android N available in early 2017.
