January 2017 Mobile News

2017 is off to an interesting start with regards to mobile news. We have major product releases from Apple, Samsung, HTC and Nokia making the news. Each of these products is a definitive new model in the respective lineup of mobile devices from these companies. And we also have something a little more lighthearted making news this month. The Apple iPhone is 10 years old today, celebrating a decade of Apple leading smartphone development. So, it makes sense to start with a new Apple product in this news update.

Apple’s next Phone is the iPhone 8

For some time now we have expected the next new Apple smartphone to be the iPhone 7S. A sensible supposition, considering how the product updates within a version are usually introduced by Apple.

But no, this is not the case. Instead, the next product launch from Apple will be the iPhone 8. One of the main rumored features of the iPhone 8 is that it will be the first VR capable smartphone. Quite an achievement. However, it should be noted that there have been few facts released to support this assumption. What we do know for sure is that the iPhone 8 will not have a start button, and will not feature a lightening port.

Another 8 – From Nokia

Actually, two 8’s. Qualcomm had two prototype handsets on display at CES. One featuring the Snapdragon 821 CPU and the other the Snapdragon 835. Both of these prototypes were badged as the Nokia 8.

Features were not uncovered in full, but both seem to incorporate advanced high-quality cameras, similar to the older PureView camera technology that Nokia used on the Lumia. Visually, they looked very much like a Nokia 6.

HTC Desire 650 Launched

The HTC Desire 650 with its massive 16GB of onboard storage and the 13-megapixel main camera has been long awaited. Possibly the first HTC phone that really catches the imagination in the last few years. With an impressive feature list for a mid-range handset.

A 5-inch gorilla glass display and a Snapdragon 400 CPU are certainly a bargain at the mid-range price point. Overall, the Desire 650 could be a major hit for HTC. And when we add the excellent rear camera and large 2,200 mAh battery into the mix, it becomes hard to overlook the value of this device.

And Yet Another 8 – From Samsung this Time

What is it with the 8 versions of smartphones this month? Apple, Nokia and now Samsung have previewed a version 8 device. In this case the Galaxy 8. Set for a launch at the end of March, with a price tag of around $850, this is a pretty high-end device.

There are very few details currently available about what will in effect, be Samsung’s new flagship product. But with a release date just a handful of months away, we can expect to hear a lot more abo this device soon.

And Finally – Happy Birthday to the Apple iPhone

Can it really be a decade since Steve Jobs first introduced the Apple iPhone at the MacWord conference in San Francisco? The original 3.5-inch display is a long way from current smartphone tech. However, there can be no doubt that this was a world-changing product. The watershed that saw traditional handsets fall into disuse and the rise of the smartphone come to the fore.

Ten years down the line, smartphones and the actual apps we use have changed society, made our lives easier, and enabled us to keep in touch with our friends, family and work contacts in new and exciting ways. So when we say happy birthday to the iPhone, we are really saying happy birthday to the smartphone.
