What's an IMEI, and where can I find it?

The IMEI number provides the link from your phone to its record in the manufacturer’s database. It’s stored in the central Equipment Identity Register (EIR), it’s unique and it consists of 15 digits.

Your IMEI’s easy to find. Just type *#06# into your cell phone keypad. Or navigate to the ‘Settings’ menu and find it there. You can also find it on your SIM card and under the battery in the back of your phone.

When you unlock your mobile phone, your IMEI is no longer associated with its original network. This gives you the freedom to switch to a different network.

There are other locking features on the iPhone 8 and other models that can stop you using your device. Here are solutions to some of the most common problems, including a forgotten password or pin code, passcode lock issues and screen lockouts.


How to unlock iPhone 8 Plus using a passcode unlock tool

The best way to unlock a screen locked iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus is by using the 'choose wipe passcode' function on an online unlock tool like Mobile Unlocked.

The big benefit of doing this, is it doesn’t require a factory settings reset.

So you don’t lose any of the data on your phone. It’s also fast and secure.

To do any of these, follow these steps:


Step 1.

Go to how to unlock disabled iPhone without iTunes unlocking tool.

Step 2.

Select unlocking mode: Screen lock.

Other options include: Apple ID, MDM iPhone and unlock Screen passcode.

Step 3.

Connect device.

Use a USB cable to connect your phone to a PC or laptop.

Step 4.

Click ‘Remove lock’.

How to unlock iPhone 8 Plus using iTunes backup or Finder

Apple.com have their own tools for bypassing the screen passcode.

These include: iTunes or Finder.

iTunes will be the go-to tool for this operation for people using macOS Mojave or earlier.

Mac users working with the operating system macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, will need to use the Finder tool instead.

The downside is the end result is an unlocked, but reset and completely wiped phone.

Yes, the passcode will have been erased, meaning you can log in without one or create a new one. But all of the data stored on your iPhone 8 will have been erased too.

That said, the process is effective if a little fiddly and slow.

In short, it means rebooting your device and putting it into recovery mode to force a factory reset.

Here’s how it works:

  • Connect the phone to a computer with the latest version of iTunes backup installed
  • Quickly press and release the Volume Up button
  • Quickly press and release the Volume Down button
  • Press and hold the Side button until the Recovery Mode screen appears
  • Launch Finder or iTunes on your computer
  • Click the iPhone icon in the top left corner of the iTunes window
  • Select 'Summary' on the left-hand side of the screen
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button
  • Click ‘Restore’ and ‘Agree’

TIPS:

  • If, during the process, you’re prompted for a password the process may not work
  • Your iPhone needs to have been previously synced to the version of iTunes you use
  • If your iPhone 8 is running on iOS 11.4.1 or later, check the ‘USB Accessories’ settings is enabled
  • This method will not resolve iCloud lockouts


How to unlock iPhone 8 Plus using iCloud’s ‘Find My’ app

The ‘Find My’ app is an iPhone feature on most iPhone models, which can track and lock down your phone if it's lost.

It can also be used to remotely erase all of the data (including your passcode) if you think your device has been stolen.

Like the iTunes unlocking method, when the app erases your phone, your personal data, settings, other passwords and logins will be lost too.

Here’s how to use it:

  • Open a browser on an iOS device with ‘Find My’ installed
  • Log in with your Apple account ID and password
  • Click ‘All Devices’
  • Select your iPhone 8 Plus from the map
  • Click ‘Erase iPhone’

TIPS:

  • If the erase doesn't work, check your device is connected to wifi or the internet
  • ‘Find My’ needs to have been enabled on your device before the phone was disabled


How to unlock iPhone 8 Plus without computer using: iOS 15/16 update

If you’re lucky enough to be running your iPhone 8 Plus on iOS 15.2 or later, you can erase or reset your locked device directly from the lock screen when it’s in security lockout mode.

You don’t have to connect it first to a Mac or PC.

You just need an active network connection.

Here’s how:

  • From your device's Lock Screen, keep typing in your passcode until you get the message to try again later
  • Go back later and repeat this action until you see the ‘Erase ?iPhone?/?iPad?’ option in the bottom corner of the screen
  • Tap ‘Erase iPhone/iPad’, then tap again to confirm
  • Key in your ?Apple ID? password to sign out of your Apple account on the device
  • Tap ‘Erase iPhone/iPad’ again to permanently delete all of your data and settings
  • When the device restarts, follow the onscreen instructions to set it up again and set a new passcode
